Driving through back to Texas. It lived up to its rating! Three sisters run it and you will feel as you were inside someone's home... It's just good home cooking. I had the crab cake po-boy! If you're hungry, definitely stop in.

We enjoyed our meal here. The white beans were very good! I give it 4 stars, because the "home" look inside the restaurant was a little too "homey" for me. Give it a shot! :)

Rita Mae's was a wonderful surprise and oh so good! We were driving from New Iberia LA toward Mobile AL via the back roads. About the time we were approaching Morgan City, hunger pangs struck and we checked out Yelp for suggestions. Rita Mae's was closest so it was an easy pick. But it is worth a bit of a drive to enjoy their tasty Southern cooking. I enjoyed shrimp stew, a special of the day. yummy. It seemed like an odd combination but so good. potatoes in everything (potato salad, green beans with potatoes, and the stew which was like a gumbo with shrimp and potatoes served over rice). Happy day!

Delicious home made food, good and friendly service. Who needs more? This is the place to eat in Morgan City.

Went to Rita Mae's when in Morgan City with my brother and his wife doing some family history research. We chose it based on Yelp reviews, and were not disappointed. I was apprehensive about eating here because I have Celiac, and must eat very strictly gluten free. I talked to the waitress and the manager, and they both advised me what to order (and not order!), and assured my meal was prepared safely for me. My brother raved over the gumbo, which he had never tried before. You need to know he's not an adventurous eater, and being from California we had precious little exposure to Southern Louisiana foods. But he was instantly smitten. My sister in law had fried catfish, and loved her meal, too. If I ever find myself in Morgan City again, I would definitely stop by. The ambience is "down home." Nothing remotely fancy. But the welcome and the great service we received were far better than many places we visited on our trip. The best part of all? The travel blessing we received before departing. I left a little of my heart at Rita Mae's Kitchen.

I was in Morgan City for the first time and hungry for lunch. Found this place on Yelp. Not disappointed. Had fried catfish. Very well prepared with Cajun taste but not overwhelming. Came with very good red beans and rice, boiled cabbage and a generous portion of corn bread. I am a cornbread snob, but Rita Mae's cornbread is some of the best I have ever eaten. Crusty bottom and side but still very moist and tasty. Not a big place, as several have mentioned it is a little bit of a dive, but I will be back next time I am in Morgan City.

This is the hole-in-the-wall, Ma'n'Pa type of restaurant you hope to find when you are in a town you don't know. Most towns don't have them any longer, but this coon-ass, swamp-food joint is truly a gem. I have eaten here a handful of times over the years, and it is real food made by real swamp-folk! Everything I have had here has easily met my expectations and hopes. Now, I have never tried their etouffe, but I will. If I can give that a good review (I have never received a real etouffe in a restaurant to date) I will amend this review to 5 stars, and sing it's never ending praise! Right now, I can only toot it's horn a bit, as it is definitely worth going to for some sweet potato pie, po-boys or gumbo!!

Yelp Review Downgrade: The last 2 times I have been here it wasn't very good. The iced tea was in a dirty plastic cup with like 2 ice-cubes in it and tasted terrible. I also got really bad heart-burn from the meal that I had. I think the place is hit or miss.

From the LBC all the way here. Hands down, best gumbo. I wish I could pick this place up and take it with me to Cali. Long Beach needs this spot.

Not the best white beans in town. Not even the 4th best to be honest. The fried shrimp were good. The smothered cabbage was salty. Biscuit was cold and hard. Left over from breakfast if I had to guess. Waited as long at the register as I did to get food.

We stopped in for Dessert. All I can say is Wow! The bread pudding is awesome. It is creamy and sweet and the coconut icing is delicious. I've never had bread pudding with pineapple in it, but I will make it like this at home. Hubby had the Sweet Potato pie...he ordered it thinking it was a piece , but nope, it is a small pie. Also delicious!

Work brings me through Morgan City a lot. I have tried to find some nice places to grub, but always a chore in this town. This place is decent, but nothing special. When I first walk in, the place is empty. No one eating here, waiting for food, or even someone out front to help me. I thought the place was closed. Then I here someone yell from the kitchen "what do you want." A woman comes out, and I order a shrimp poboy. I found the service odd, awkward, and a little rude frankly. I wanted to like the vibe of the place, but instead of it coming off cozy and warm I got the feeling they did not want me here. There was one TV playing soap operas, for some reason. Part of the building did not seem finished either. Anyway, I got my food in a to go bag, even though I was planning on eating there. Guess they don't want me to. I payed and left. The sandwich was not bad, but overall nothing that I can't get in anywhere else. I was not that thrilled with my experience. Maybe I will give the place another chance because the options in this city are not great. That is not really a ringing endorsement.

I was pretty excited to try this place after driving by it almost everyday for the past couple years and reading mostly good reviews on it. So, I finally gave them a try and I was severely disappointed - I don't think the staff could have been ruder or anymore unwelcoming than they were. I won't be going back.

The food was so well seasoned and so homestyle that we didn't want to leave. You know a place is good when it is filled with locals. Loved the catfish and the seafood gumbo. The pecan pie was so delicious we took a whole one home to bring to a dinner party.

I was deeply disappointed. Ordered the club sandwich. It was lousy. The ice tea was like dirty water, had no taste. They have chicken like livers on the menu but never to actually cook. Go somewhere else and save the money.

Just try it. You won't regret it and will want to eat here more. Awesome food, great staff and delicious deserts that can be meals of their own.

So so good! Fried chicken, crab cake poboy, red beans, white beans, everything was delicious. They offer breakfast, and the grits and biscuits were both amazing. Highly recommended if you find yourself in Morgan City.

Nothing fancy, but very home like. I was waited on me almost immediately and she was very friendly. I explained to her that I was passing through and found them on YELP. I asked her what they were famous for and without hesitation she replied, "crab burger"! That's what I ordered. It only took about 10-12 minutes to bring the crab burger to the table. IT'S HUGE!!! A 6" crab patty (haha, I had a flashback of my son and I watching sponge bob square pants) hanging over the edges of the bun. It's served with lettuce, tomato, pickles and mayo. Absolutely Delicious!

I was in Morgan City with co-workers on (another) business trip. This wasn't our first or second choice, but I'm real glad we did wind up here. Between three of us there was fried chicken, red beans, fired fish platter, and shrimp and okra gumbo. All of it was damn good. Also, they have sweet potato pie. No, I mean they have SWEET POTATO PIE it is so delicious. The place is an old house, good atmosphere, decent price. Good deal.

99% of the year I am a vegetarian, but sometimes I break the rules. And I happily broke them for probably the best fried chicken I will ever eat. It was moist, perfectly crisply fried, perfectly spiced and delicious. I ate every morsel I could off of those bones. It came accompanied with the white beans. Mmmmmmm. We sat next to a friend of the chef's who was sweet, informative and quite interesting. As we sat there chomping away, numerous locals came in who all knew the friend of the chef's as well as the chef himself. I would wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants delicious, southern, amazing and authentic food. Service was great and friendly; I told the chef afterwards that it was sooooo delicious and thank you and he just responded with the biggest, cutest smile. Yum! Eat here!

The third star is for atmosphere. The food was mediocre. I had fried chicken with red beans and rice. My wife ate the fried catfish with white beans and rice. Lots of flavorless breading and bland beans. I wouldn't go back.

This place is amazing! It's as if your mom or grandma is cookin you up your favorite dish. I am staying in Morgan City for 30 days and will probably eat here at least 3 times a week. The Meatloaf special is to die for and their bread pudding is a must so save room!

I'm still trying to figure what the big deal is about this place. I mean honestly, so they serve what some might consider "Soul Food" but basically anyone who cooks Louisiana food who's from this area does nothing different. Someone turned some old house into a restaurant, well big deal! It looks dirty and the seating is very cramped. My table was next to a noisy a/c window unit with a filthy filter, with a dead fly on it. I've tasted much, much better red beans and rice from Popeye's for a fraction of the cost. The staff isn't friendly at all and never check to see if you need anything once they bring out your food. The whole place tries to come across as some hole in the wall restaurant in New Orleans and maybe appearance wise it looks like a place that was damaged heavily there from Katrina. When I first stepped in I honestly thought I'd fall through the floor. But you want New Orleans? Go to New Orleans! As always, anything here disappoints and this place is no different.

Came here a year ago while traveling. It was so good I couldn't wait to come back. The decor is simple and so is the food, but it is GOOOD. Classic Cajun comfort food.

I don't know if I'll ever have a better sausage sandwich. All the dressings worked well, but the sausage was really the star: taut skin with a good bite, flavorful and textured inside with just the right amount of spiciness. As for the restaurant itself, it had a very nice local feel, where it seemed most people knew each other.

Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. Quaint little place with a very welcoming waitress. Upon entering no one was around then she popped out of the kitchen eager to help. It was evident that the locals love it because once other customers arrived it was if I had been invited to someone else's family reunion. I ordered fried catfish and red beans and rice which did not disappoint. While paying at the register, I spotted a very generous portion of a homemade brownie under the counter and had to grab one for the road. The brownie was so delicious and super fresh allowing me to enjoy my experience even after I had left.

Quirky, authentic. Small restaurant under the bridge. Three generations cooking and serving. Got,the special, seafood gu Bo with tons of okr. Got. Side of red bens nd rice tht was perfectly cooked nd seasoned. Prices were stiff for what we got, must have special prices for tourists. One cup of gumbo, plus one bowl of gumbo and. Side of red bens, with two teas was $26 before tip. Tasty but pricey.

Oh man. This place was fabulous. You know it's good when everyone there seems to know one another and they offer you free cake from the birthday party they are hosting. Such hospitality! I had the fried chicken with red beans/rice and it was PHENOMENAL. Especially the red beans/rice, I could LIVE on that. My boyfriend had the fried catfish/shrimp po-boy and was raving about it for days. We will absolutely return if we pass through the area again. This is legit, a real Louisiana experience.

Rita Mae's is authentic local cuisine in a small house in Morgan City. I had the seafood gumbo that comes with potato salad and a crab cake which is more like a deep fried golden crab football. It was huge with bright green slices of jalapeño inside. The gumbo had just enough heat to make my nose run and that's a sign of great gumbo. I tasted my brother in law's corn bread and it was sweet and tender like other reviewers described. His breaded pork chop was enormous. I ate all of the potato salad which was mustard based with was that curry? Love the food here. I understand why so many other people found it memorable.

I was quickly greeted by one of the owners, they definitely do it right. Smile on his face and wanting to serve me. I felt very welcome and we were off to a great start. The menus are hand typed, home style. I have been to a lot of places and I have a feeling that this may be the one, the one where I stick my neck out for the other culinary critics to chop it off or be validated to be in the same relm as them. This may be..... It appears, I am saddened to say that this is not that place. The food was pretty good for country cooking. I had the seafood gumbo which was tomato based, very hot and had crawfish only as the meat. I requested the red beans and rice was told that they did not have any. The only highlight was the grilled shrimp, they were very good tasting, they were 30-40 count size and the price was too high for the amount. The restaurant is designed well, the atmosphere is good. The food quality was not there. It is above average, but not worth the price that I paid this visit. I will try this place one more time, because everyone has a bad day.

OMG!! The atmosphere left me w/ something to be desired but the food...OMG the food! I think I've eaten the best catfish and fried shrimp I've ever had in my life! Don't let the curbside appeal fool you. Go inside...try the food. You won't leave disappointed!

Great roast beef poboy. The gravy was delicious. And the fried chicken is the best I've ever had. Our server was very nice. Would like to go back to try the bread pudding. Wish they served alcohol.

Great great food! We stopped here for lunch on our way from NOLA to Lafayette. We had two mainstays from the menu: seafood gumbo and the crab po'boy. Each was perfectly seasoned and cooked. We plan on stopping in on our return trip. Friendly service, too. Just stop in; you won't be disappointed.
